John Doing recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts in Percussion Performance and a Concentration in African Studies.
John currently plays drums and does all marketing for The Actual Quintet and The Red Quartet, and is an active member of Spectrum Trio, CHAFO, Houses in Motion, Wadoma, The Rhythm Section, and others. John plays percussion and piano for dance classes at the UW and in other classes around town. Performing at a professional level on both drumset and percussion, John blends his classical music background with West African, Afro-Latin, Jazz, and Funk styles.
As a student of music performance and African studies, John is researching African roots in Caribbean music and is pursuing lessons with various teachers in drumset, congas, and jembe, including Jamie Ryan, Ryan Korb, Francisco Martinez, Mike Spiro, and Padraic Cassidy.
John has taught private lessons for several years to students of different musical backgrounds. Students have included: elementary to high school percussion students, local drummers, electric bass players, band teachers, etc. He has also been a musical mentor through several organizations including local schools and the Wisconsin Youth Company.
John is a full-time musician who reads music and is a fluent improvisor. He owns all his own equipment and is available for performances year round.
